Ah, Dot Allison, one of my favorite female voices. Of course, this has nothing to do with the fact that I thought she was quite a looker too (or that she looked a bit like my wife in certain photos)... but I digress. First, she fronted the Glasgow-based One Dove for one album (and several singles) in 1991 before going solo with two brilliant albums (the now out-of-print Afterglow was my number 1 album pick for 1999). Her breathy, whispering, siren-like vocals are delicately hypnotic and work over any instrumentation, but especially with downtempo electronics. She's been featured on multiple albums by other artists including Death in Vegas, Massive Attack, and Slam. While the song below is hardly an introduction to such a talented musician (see bonus tracks for more), I felt it was an appropriate addition for Halloween. Death in Vegas' Dirge is dark and moody, along the lines of Half Light from the Mothman Prophecies soundtrack. So, add this to your iPod Halloween mix and enjoy.Dirge (Death in Vegas featuring Dot Allison)
