Vintage Christmas Wax: Revisited

Last year I posted a series of entries entitled "Vintage Christmas Wax" which most folks were pretty happy about. Alas, several of the old links have expired. Rather than have everyone search for the active links, I decided to compile the remaining links into one simple post. So, once again, here is a collection of vintage wax recordings from the early 1900s through the late 1930s (my favorite continues to be Eddie Cantor). Many of these fantastic transfers are from The Antique Christmas Lights Museum. Others were sourced from The Cylinder Preservation & Digitization Project, Canada's Virtual Gramaphone, the Library & Archives Canada, The Library of Congress, The Edison National Historic Site, and the Internet Archive. Happy Holidays!!! Some of the files may take some time to load. NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, these files are in the public domain. For any restrictions on their usage, please refer to the websites mentioned above as they may have more specific disclaimers.

Paul,
Thanks for this :) It's Classic Christmas! Are these songs in the public domain? I would love to throw some together on some cds and get them out to friends and family members, but I don't want to be doing the joail house rock and have a blue Christmas :D Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you,

I renamed all the files to match the links above and put in a ZIP file for easier downloading. Enjoy.

Can we assume these are in the public domain due to their age?

DJ said...

Yes! Thanks for taking the time and effort!
To echo other posters comments
- please let us know if these are in the public domain
- and yes! Please, at some future point put together a collection of non-Christmas.

What a great holiday treat!
:o)

These recordings are *not* in the public domain unless they were dedicated to it at some time, but are instead likely orphaned works (i.e. - those whose whose copyright holders are not ascertainable).

Although all pre-1923 books & movies are in the public domain, due to the vagaries of U.S. copyright law, virtually zero sound recordings in the United States have expired into the public domain. The reason for this is that sound recordings created before 1972 are not protected under federal copyright law; however, by congressional fiat, existing state statutory protections will remain in force until 2047.

... But don't let that dissuade you from sharing or downloading these. No one can complain but the copyright holders themselves!

Josh Benfey said...

Uh, small correction - it's 2067 not 2047. Sorry.

Ho Ho Ho! Thanks for the classic cuts. (Folks interested in more should try redhotjazz.com and tinfoil.com in addition to the sources already cited.

Thanks to collector of antiques for putting it all together in one zip. Too bad I didn't read the comments before downloading them all (and renaming them) myself -- next time, next time.

I wanted something other-worldly for Christmas, and these tracks sound like small towns in Ontario, way long ago. Thanks.

WARNING!!! Note about the ZIP file!!!!

Some of the files in the ZIP above are truncated. These seem to be the ones from the CA server, which may or may not be of the same vintage as these recordings.

lukus said...

thanks for the links - they're great... wonderfully atmospheric - the files from the ca servers seem to take forever to download.. i noticed that many of these are also incomplete in the zip file.. has anyone managed to download the full files?

I can confirm that many of the files are truncated in the ZIP.

Sounds like folks are better off downloading file by file (I did not make the zip file, but appreciate the effort that went in to providing it). Some of the links do take some time to download, and due to the increased traffic this blog past has generated, they may be even slower now.

Cheers,
Paul F

Has anyone been able to download complete files from the CA server?
I've been trying for the past two days. The transfers timeout or connection gets severed.

Anyone know what's up with their server?

BTW, thanks Paul for putting this all together.

Want to hear more vintage holiday music? Go here:
http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/25615

...it's an archived radio show, not individual files. Great stuff in any case.

Rebekah said...

Thank you so much for putting these up! I took them all.

Dawn Marie said...

oh they're so groovy! Thank you so much for putting them up!

Paul F. said...

WheezerTheGeezer, not sure what is wrong with the CA server, but I assume that heavy download traffic may be an issue. People who have found this post later (rather than sooner) have had more download issues with some of the files. Hopefully this will clear up in time for everyone's holiday.

As for all the kind comments, I'm pleased to see so many folks enjoying these old classics and happy to see they will be playing a part in so many holiday celebrations.

Have a great holiday season everyone, and look forward to more "vintage wax" in the future.

All the best,
Paul F

Well, it's 9a.m. Christmas Eve morning and I'm able to download the stuff from the Canadian server. It's still slow but a lot better than last week. Their poor server must be running on a Commodore 64 or something!
Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone!
Oh, and please Santa, bring the Canadians a new server. They are nice and deserve a present.

Calista said...

Thanks! Downloading a bunch of these for present-opening jollity tomorrow (Xmas) morning. Cheers!

When I was a very young child, My father, who was born in 1899, had a great big thing that played wax cylinders. One year he donated them to the historical society in his hometown in Massachusetts. I know not what became of them. Listening to these brings back my childhood and my father, who died in 1965. What a wonderful gift. Thank you so much.
